Dolomites 2005 Album Page 20—Fortifications

Some of the fortifications left from WWI when this area was a battleground between the Austrians and Italians. Tunnels were dug into the rock to create gun emplacements. Trenches were constructed of scree. And occasionally tunnels were dug beneath the enemy's tunnels, filled with explosives and then detonated to destroy the enemy's position.
